Flashcard Software

It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at flashcard programs and longer still since I’ve seriously used flashcards (we were given flashcards to help us learn Chinese characters when I was at Leeds University in 1979). Today I came across Anki and was favourably impressed. It’s simple to use, configurable, and makes it easy to download content that others have shared. Within a minute of downloading it, I was using it to learn Brazilian Portuguese words. More useful for those in EAP is a list of 5000 SAT test words which are more-or-less the level we want our students to get to (with some exceptions like “adieu”). If someone could upload the Academic Word List, that would be even better.

thanks for this, I’ll check it out – I’ve been using google docs spreadsheets to set up vocab learning for my students – there are a few gadgets you can insert that students can use to create flashcardy learning tools as well…

AFAIK you can import from spreadsheets to Anki, but I haven’t tried it yet.
